Maryland State Requirement Details for Real Estate Continuing Education
Renewal Date: Every two years from the date of original licensure
Hours Required: 15 hours
Effective 10/1/2023 - FIRST TIME LICENSEES:
All first time licensees who were issued an initial associate real estate broker or salesperson license, the subject matter of continuing education courses must include at least one 3-clock hour course for each of the following topics:
- Contract Writing
- The Principles of Real Estate Brokerage
- The Principles of Real Estate Practice
- Property Management and Landlord and Tenant Laws
Additionally, the licensee must complete at least one 1.5 clock hour course for each of the following topics:
- Professionalism as it relates to the Maryland Code of Ethics
- Real Estate Financing
SUBSEQUENT RENEWALS - subsequent renewal licensees are required to complete the following:
RESIDENTIAL Salespersons and Associate Brokers: 15 hours
- 3.0 Legislative
- 3.0 Brokerage Relationships and Disclosure
- 3.0 Ethics
- 1.5 Fair Housing (required classes)
- 4.5 Electives
COMMERCIAL Designation (SOLELY - NO RESIDENTIAL BUSINESS) Salespersons and Assoc. Brokers
- 3.0 Legislative
- 3.0 MREC Agency-commercial
- 3.0 Ethics (required classes)
- 6.0 Electives
Note: Legislative topic (A), Ethics topic (D), and Brokerage Relationships and Disclosure/MREC Agency-Commercial (H) are required Maryland courses for all licensees.

Please Note: The MREC Brokerage Relationships & Disclosures course does not meet the agency requirements for commercial agents. The CE Shop does not offer a commercial agency course at this time.

Reporting: The state requires schools to report course completions within three days from the course completion date. Course completions will be reported within this time frame.
Expiration Date of Course: Course expiration dates vary by course but are generally one year after order date. Each individual course will have an expiration date listed in your account.
Final Exams: Final exams must be passed with at least a 70% and may be taken as many times as necessary in order to pass.
Certificates: Immediately upon real estate course completion, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course certificate of completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your certificate(s) of completion with your renewal. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date on your certificate of completion will reflect this.
Please Note: Once a licensee assumes a supervisory position as a broker, BOM, or team leader, he/she will have 90 days to complete 3 clock hours of MREC Required Supervision Course, if he/she didn’t already complete it for his/her last renewal.
License Renewal Process: The process to renew in this state is to log in to the licensing system online and follow the prompts to renew.
