District of Columbia Real Estate License Requirements

Licensing Board/Commission: District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs

District of Columbia Real Estate Education Requirements:

  • District of Columbia real estate salesperson license: 60 hours of salesperson education, and a 3-hour DC Real Estate Commission approved Fair Housing course
  • District of Columbia real estate broker license: 135 hours of broker pre-license education (as well as 2 years of experience as a salesperson), and a 3-hour DC Real Estate Commission approved Fair Housing course

 

District of Columbia State Reciprocity

Real estate commissions and boards across the country are adopting policies for a real estate agent in one state to more easily become licensed in another state.

Licensees who wish to apply for a reciprocal license in the District of Columbia must:

  • Complete a 3-hour DC Real Estate Commission approved Fair Housing course.
  • Pass the DC state portion of the Salesperson examination (license application must be submitted within 6 months from the exam date)
  • Submit original letter of license certification from the jurisdiction of origin dated within 90 days

 

District of Columbia Real Estate Continuing Education (CE) and License Renewal Requirements:

  • District of Columbia real estate salespersons must renew their real estate licenses by August 31 of odd-numbered years
  • District of Columbia real estate brokers must renew their real estate licenses by February 28 odd-numbered years
  • Salespersons and Brokers must complete 15 hours of continuing education including 9 hours of mandatory topic courses determined by the Commission for each renewal cycle, and 6 hours of electives.
